As a kid, I spent a lot of time holidaying on the Mornington Peninsula. My grandfather had a block of land in Rosebud and we would often camp there. The Mornington Peninsula offers beach, bush, and surf. What more could a kid want? I still spent a lot of time down there as I got older. Weekend trips with mates to Rye and Sorrento and of course New Year’s Eve was always exciting on the peninsula.  Over the years we got to know the place fairly well, but I never knew there was a lighthouse at Cape Schanck! I felt a bit stupid because I’m sure that it is common knowledge. So last night I had to check it out.

According to wikipedia the Cape Schanck Lighthouse was built in 1859 and was the second coastal lighthouse built in Victoria. Standing 21 meters tall and built from limestone, its focal plane stands 100 meters above sea level. The light from the lighthouse sends the morse code signal “N”. I’m assuming that stands for “North”, but maybe someone can correct me on that?

A short walk from the car park and you arrive at these amazing views.

I quickly realised that this place was no well-kept secret. Within 30 mins of being there, a swarm of other photographers arrived including 6 different wedding photographers. I then spent the next hour getting photo bombed by wedding photographers and wedding couples. Knowing a thing or two about wedding photography, I couldn’t help but watch.

As the sun started to drop the wedding couples started to go home, leaving the place free to a few other landscape photographers and myself. It was a really clear night which isn’t great for sunset photography, but it is great for astrology photography. I was hoping to see the Milky Way but sadly the moon was too bright.

All in all Cape Schanck is a beautiful place and worth the visit.
